Darling Sister,

Here we are reunited once more after the long Lenten fast. This year, it was a little less strict at the beginning because we all had the flu. I was on retreat by 24th February, and was ill the whole time, but we’ve all been better for several weeks now. The Sisters at the Abbey had it twice. Mother of the Sacred Heart died, for she had been sick for a while. We celebrated her fiftieth anniversary a year ago.

I had a great deal of work to do during Lent and now another task has befallen me. Although it is a glorious one, our poor human nature is so opposed to effort that it’s still hard. I’ve been asked to design the Apotheosis of our dear little Thérèse so that the artist in Rome can copy it. I’m taking inspiration from the beatification painting. As I already have a lot of work, I’m a bit snowed under, but this year I mustn’t expect to get much rest. What’s more, “God tempers the wind to the shorn lamb,” and He takes pity on his poor little “maid”. He takes pity on her without her realising it, it’s true, but she is convinced that He is looking after both His affairs and those of His little “servant.”

Léonie, I’m not quite sure what I’m saying, but I know you’ll understand your poor little sister. She wants to be a good “maid” even though she is still very mean and imperfect.

Our building work is progressing. On the 13th, we placed the statue of St Michael in its niche. May he strike down all the demons trying to thwart our work.

I send you my love, darling sister. Your little Céline
