Keys for reading the circulars

The circulars are specific texts written according to a very special literary genre.

These are biographies but not just any biographies; those of Carmelite nuns, written for other Carmelites across France.

We usually find the following information there:

- The family

- Several anecdotes about childhood

- The first wish for religious life

- The desire for Carmel

- Obstacles to entry

- Support

- Entry and first difficulties

- Work and jobs

- Spiritual life

- Fraternal relationships

- Beginning of the last illness

- Doctor’s care

- Spiritual care from the chaplain

- Death

- Request for prayers for the repose of the dead person’s soul.

- For Lisieux's Carmelites, we may add another point: the relations Saint Therese had with the sisters who knew her.
