From Sr Francoise-Therese (Leonie) to Sr Marie of the Sacred Heart – August 28th 1899

 28th August 1899

Dearest and much-loved Sister,

Today is a sad yet sweet anniversary that naturally brings me closer to you. So much has happened since that day twenty two years ago when our darling mamma left exile . . . . So many memories are crowding my poor heart that I feel at a loss to describe them, because they are indefinable.

Don’t you, like me, find that these empty spaces around us are intended to detach us from creation, so that we lose ourselves forever in the One who represents everything to us.

Our beloved parents must be so happy and smiling down from heaven on high to see us all belonging to God. Is it not what they ardently desired, amidst the darkness of exile? And now they are swimming in uncreated light.

Darling little Marie, on this day I’m so happy to convey all my affection to you once again, and know that I’m perfectly happy, as happy as it’s possible to be here below. When I happen to look back on my life and compare my earliest childhood with my life now, I almost melt out of gratitude to the sweet Heart of Jesus. He enfolded me with much love and hid me Himself in this sweet Vestibule to heaven. Here I must live, and also die.
