           Dear Uncle,

I’m very sorry to hear you’re sick and I wish I was near you to nurse you. I would show you great affection and devotion in return for all the affection and devotion you showed us, and me in particular during the five years that I lived with you. That’s not forgetting our dear Father, whom you took in with the same respect that you would’ve shown your own father.

O, darling Uncle, it’s not because we don’t often talk about such things that our memories fade or our gratitude dies away. On the contrary, it’s like those perfumes that keep their scent better for not being exposed to the air.
So believe me, even though you don’t see it at present because I’m unable to show you my affection outwardly, you are blessed, because your little girl asks God every day to repay her debt to you Himself. Oh, how I’m going to beg Him to take away your suffering! If only He would give it to me. I’d be so happy to soothe you!

Dear Uncle, I send you all my love through darling little Jeanne, whom I love more and more if that’s possible. I send my love to her, too, and to Francis.
