Holy card 02 - Joan of Arc in her prison (photos no. 13 and 14 of Thérèse) - 1896

This card is made of two photos glued on cardboard, surrounded by Biblical texts.
There were at least five copies in circulation. The original below was offered to Bellière after the death of Thérèse and returned to Carmel around 1962 after quite a trip (cf VT 1880, January, p.71). It was copied by Céline for herself and for Marie of the Sacred Heart, then by Marie of the Trinity. Another copy had been made for the Museum of Orleans and destroyed during the bombing of 1940.

R° The Ven. Joan of Arc in her prison
Whoever wishes to come after me, must deny himself, take up his cross and follow me. For whoever wishes to save his life will lose it, but whoever loses his life for my sake will find it. Mt 16, 24-25.
To my foes, I am a thing of scorn, to my neighbors a dreaded sight…I am forgotten, out of mind like the dead, but I trust in you, Lord; I say "You are my God." Pss 31,12-13,15.
Amen, amen, I say to you, unless a grain of wheat falls to the ground and dies, it remains just a grain of wheat; but if it dies it produces much fruit. Jn 12:24-25.
Why are you downcast, my soul; why do you groan within me? When I went in procession with the crowd, I went with them to the house of God, amid loud cries of thanksgiving, with the multitude keeping festival. Pss 42,6,5.

V° The Ven. Joan of Arc consoled in her prison by St Catherine, virgin and martyr
I give you praise, Father, Lord of heaven and earth, for although you have hidden these things from the wise and the learned, you have revealed them to the childlike. Lk 10,21
Blessed are they who suffer persecution for the sake of righteousness, for theirs is the kingdom of heaven...Blessed are those who mourn, for they will be consoled. Mt 5
I have competed well; I have finished the race. From now on the crown of righteousness awaits me. St. Paul, 2 Tim. 4,7-8
Blessed are you when they insult you and persecute you, and utter every kind of evil against you [falsely] because of me. Rejoice and be glad, for your reward will be great in heaven. Mt 5, 11-12
