Dear little Jeanne,

I do not know how to thank you for your kind attention.

I was very much touched when seeing that the name of Francis accompanied that of Jeanne in wishing me a happy feast, so it is to both of you that I am sending my thanks.

I am entrusting the payment of my debt to my divine Spouse; since I am poor because of Him, it is only right that He not refuse me what I am asking for those whom I love.

I assure you, dear Jeanne, that if you are not forgetting the littlest of your sisters, she, too, thinks very often of you, and you know that for a Carmelite to remember and especially to love is to pray. My poor prayers undoubtedly are not worth much, however, I hope that Jesus will answer them, and, instead of looking at her who is addressing them to Him, He will rest His eyes on those who are their object, and thus He will be obliged to grant me all my requests. I hope that soon God will send a little Isidore as perfect as his Papa or else a little Jeanne resembling exactly her Mamma... I am asking that the pharmacy may be finally sold. I would like nothing to be lacking to the perfect happiness of my dear little sister and that of my good cousin. But on earth there will always be some little cloud since life cannot go on without it, and since in heaven alone joy will be perfect. However, I desire that as much as possible God may spare those whom I love the inevitable sufferings of life, even if it means taking upon myself, if necessary, the trials He is reserving for them.

Sister Marie of the Sacred Heart asks me to thank you very much for what you have sent for the empty pocket; it is really too kind on your part, and this all the more since our Mother was happy to be able to offer you this little work. I have only enough space left to say again thanks from myself and my sisters and to send you and our dear cousin as well the assurance of the affection of the last of your sisters, who is not the littlest in the tenderness she has for you....
