From Marie Martin to Marie-Louise Morel – October 24, 1875.

The time is coming when I must take Céline in hand, because I’m the one who’s in charge of teaching her… only for a while. She is still too young and too fragile to go to boarding school, and I can assure you I am perfectly happy and proud of my mission. She can already read and write passably. Now she is learning a bit of catechism and Bible history, it’s great fun showing her, it’s very entertaining for me when she isn’t naughty. But, too often, Thérèse comes and disturbs our serious studies with her presence. She comes into my room without making a sound and amuses herself tipping over my inkwell or quills, takes whatever books are to hand, and then runs off like a little thief. When she comes back, it’s to tease her sister by repeating in a mocking little voice every word that poor little Céline makes so much effort to learn. Well, our baby is a pretty imp. Funny little Thérèse is kind, shrewd and cute all at the same time.
