From Marie (Marie of the Sacred Heart) to her father Mr. Martin 1st November 1888.

Darling Father,

It hasn’t been long since you left (on 30th October to Le Havre with Céline) and I’m already longing to see you again. Your jewels, the diamond, fine pearl and Queen love you so much.

We celebrated All Saints Day eating the fine fish you brought us from Honfleur. It’s far too good for Carmelites, we’ve never seen such good food [1 v°] on our humble table. But since God gives it to us through you, we thank him with all our hearts. O darling Father, may this good Master keep you with us and may He not allow you to ever become distanced from us.

Today I prayed to our dear Mother in Heaven to watch over us, to protect our revered father who is more prized to us than the apple of our eyes. Here I am making rhymes [2r°] without meaning to, for my mind isn’t as lofty as that. I’m not at all a poet like our lamb, which doesn’t prevent me from feeling and loving like her with all my heart.

O beloved Father, come back to us quickly, how happy I’ll be to see you.

Your diamond

M. of the S. H.
