From our Monastery in Le Mans

17th March 1861

Beloved Sister.

You may be surprised that I am writing to you before Easter (according to the monastic custom of the time, there was normally no correspondence during Lent. Cf. letter 8); But it is to ask you if you know Mr. Moreau, the wine merchant, who lives in Alençon. Mrs. Moreau came to the Visitation to enroll her 6 year-old daughter and we would like to have some information about this family of whom I’ve never heard. It will be easy for you to find out who they are without being suspected of being sent to find out about them. Answer us as soon as possible.

I am well, I really wish it were the same for you. I am quite worried about you. I hope your business is not giving you too much trouble. I often pray*[v°] for you, not for your suffering to stop if that is not God‘s will, but so that through it he may be glorified and you may have salvation. And yet I love you so much you know, dear Sister, take heart, the Holy Church is much more persecuted than you (18-9-1860: defeat of Lamoricière at the head of the papal troops in Castelfidardo; 23-3-1861, the Kingdom of Northern Italy became the Kingdom of Italy. For 10 years after that, the "Roman Question" dominated the French political scene, causing Napoleon III to tighten his regime against Catholics) and yet Our Lord loves it very much. I never forget my brother either; I am having a little war with God so that he may come back to us a good man. As for my Father, I thank Our Lord for all the virtues he chooses to bestow on him in his old-age (Mr. Guérin senior was then 72 years old. He lived in rue Saint-Blaise, in the house he had acquired in 1843) and beg him to always increase them. In short, I pray for all of you, it is the only good I can do for you and I am no good at anything else.

Goodbye my Dear Sister, take heart and trust God, I will stop here because we must not forget that it is Lent: pray for me so that I may be a good nun. Please give my love to all the family; but especially to my dear Father.

With all my love.

Sr. M. Dosithée Guérin

[tv]. If you are coming to see me as soon as you promised you would I will not write to you beforehand: some of our sisters have already asked me if they can see your little daughter (Marie, born on 22nd February 1860), make sure she is really sweet.
