From our Monastery in Le Mans

9th March 1867

Dear Sister,

I am writing you a note to ask you if you would go to Miss Pauline Lenormand’s and pick up the (artificial) flowers that she was kind enough to cut out for me with her cutter. She doesn’t know with whom to send them; I know that you often have the opportunity, I would be very pleased to have them; you could also, at the same time, send the little book we lent you if you have finished reading it that is.

Take heart and have faith dear sister, I urge you to pray to Our Lady of the Sacred Heart for your little Pauline, if you knew what graces we receive through her intercession and the numerous miracles she works: ask her, if it is God’s will, to let you keep your little girl whom you will give to her when she is grown-up (providing, however, it is her vocation).

Prayer to Our Lady of the Sacred Heart:

Our Lady of the Sacred Heart, remember thy ineffable power on the heart of your Divine Son. Full of trust in thy merits, I come before thee and beg thy protection. O heavenly Treasurer of the Heart of Jesus, that Heart which is the inexhaustible source of all graces, which thou may open to us at thy good pleasure, so that from it may flow forth upon mankind the riches of love and mercy, light and salvation, that are contained therein; grant unto us, we beseech thee, the favours which we seek (grant my sister an apostle of the Heart of Jesus, who will devote himself entirely to thy service and to the service of thy Divine Son, may he forever preserve his baptismal innocence and not die before having worked hard for Our Lord and the salvation of souls. I promise thee, O Our Lady of the Sacred Heart, that he will bear the name Mary).

No, I cannot meet with a refusal, and since thou art our Mother, O Our Lady of the Sacred Heart, graciously hear my prayer and grant my request. Amen.

[1 v°] I want to pray to this Blessed Virgin daily and promise her two little bouquets (with permission) that she may give you this year the son you so wish for, (a second Joseph would be born on 19th December 1867). Console yourself over the loss of your little Joseph, the other day I heard something which struck me: It was about a man who had an only son whom he loved tenderly, this child fell ill, the Father appealed to a saint for whom he had great devotion and beseeched him to save the life of his child, he died however and the poor man was so aggrieved by it that he began to defy his preferred saint: the saint appeared to him and said: what are you complaining about? You asked me to give your son long life and I could not do better or obtain him a longer one than eternal life.

Goodbye dear sister, it is Lent (which had begun on 6th March) and I don’t want to write a long letter. I only wanted to bring you further consolation. Give everyone my love.

Your affectionate Sister

Sr. Marie Dosithée Guérin

[l r° tv] Don’t forget (sic) to give my regards to Miss Lenormand and thank her for me.
