From Mme Martin to Mme Guérin

August 29, 1868

My brother asked me to give you an account of what happened today. He’s tired, and I sent him to rest.

This morning, at seven o’clock, we both said the prayers for the dying at my father’s bedside. At ten o’clock, he began to feel better. This improvement continued throughout the day, and we hope to save him. He speaks much more freely and is interested in everything. This evening he’s a little worse, the fever returned. I’m afraid of what will happen during the night.

Goodbye, my dear sister. As you see, I’m in great pain. This is a sad week for me. My dear little angel, who was so beautiful, had to leave us.

I wish with all my heart that you’ll never know such sorrow. And my poor father, I’m so afraid of losing him too.
