From Mme Martin to her brother

January 17, 1873

… I’m extremely worried about my little Thérèse. I’m afraid she has an intestinal illness. I notice the same alarming symptoms as those of my other children who died. Must I lose this one, too?

Tell me how I should feed her, if the bread water with half milk is suitable. All she’s been doing is sleeping this morning for three and a half hours. We make her drink while sleeping, so she’s taken almost nothing.

I don’t know if it’s the weakness that causes this sleepiness, and I’m very anxious. As for me, I barely sleep more than two hours because I’m almost constantly around the little one, who for some time has been very restless a good part of the night.

If you can write me and encourage me with your advice, that would make me very happy because I need it so much.
