 JOAN

What a change has come over me!... O sweet Virgin, your voice has dissipated all my fears, now I'm not afraid anymore.... Saint Michael the Archangel came, he too, to visit me, his voice just terrified me. But your sweet singing gives me so much joy that I will fearlessly obey God's will!

[Scene 8]

SAINT MARGARET enters and greets Saint Catherine.

Melody: "Seigneur, quand de ma froide couche... " ["Lord, When from my Chilly Bed..."]

Renowned virgin Catherine
In vain I sought you in Heaven.
Just now I crossed the hill
Between me and this place.
I was on the holy Mountain
Where I asked the Lord
To send a beautiful consoling angel
To our dear little friend.

And the great King said to me:
"Fly to the simple shepherdess's side,
My heavenly messenger.
I can put My trust in you

And in the virgin Catherine,
Beloved spouse of My heart.
Fulfill your godly mission
Sustain my humble flower."

SAINT CATHERINE, to Saint Margaret

Melody: "Tombé du nid" ["Fallen From the Nest"]

Greetings, O beautiful Queen!
Whom the Great King loves.
Come, lovely Sovereign,
Sit down beside me
And teach this simple shepherdess
How she may reign forever.
This child who is so dear to us
Deserves our care and our love,
When she is martyred,
Coming to smile upon her,
We will show her Heaven
And we will take her there!...

The two saints sit down on the rock. Joan stays on her knees before them.

SAINT MARGARET, to Joan.
Melody: "Seigneur, quand de ma froide couche..."
Heaven is so close to earth
And the Lord knows your desires.
The saints hear your prayers
And they gather up all your sighs.

The Blessed Ones and the Holy Angels
Are always watching over you.
All the heavenly hosts
Have begged me to tell you this.

JOAN

This is too much consolation for one day!... (Clasping her hands together.) Lady, I can hardly understand such kindnesses, but since you are so good to me, please do not keep your name a secret.

SAINT MARGARET

Melody: "Seigneur,..." (same as above).

I am Queen Margaret;
My kingdom is the beautiful blue Heaven,
For all eternity I take refuge
In the glorious palace of my God.
All of the grandeurs of earth
Were without charm in my eyes.
The joys of earth seem bitter to me
when I consider Heaven.

Soon honor and glory
Will come upon you, Joan.
You'll carry off the victory
And you will reign, like me,

Not wanting any praise.
Everything will be for Jesus.
Your angel who will gather your virtues,
How you will make that angel smile!

Dear shepherdess, see
How forever you will reign
Despising earthly honors.
Jesus will have all your love.

JOAN

O, beautiful Queen, it is true! The only honor and glory I want is Our Lord's. I care nothing for earthly grandeur, but I would wish to be of the royalty of Heaven, whatever it costs. Even if I must go to the ends of the earth and there pour out all my blood, I hope that, with the grace of Our Lord, I will never hesitate for even a moment.

SAINT CATHERINE

Melody: "Tombé du nid" ["Fallen From the Nest"].

Like me, you will be martyred
But Jesus will give you strength.
He will rest in your heart forever
Like a sweet bouquet of myrrh.
After this life's exile

Jesus will know to comfort you.
Inclining his holy Face toward you,
He will give you His kiss!...
Joan, young martyr,
In a holy trance,
In Heaven forever,
You will sing of His goodness...

JOAN

If Jesus looks on me with His Holy Face, then I understand that I must suffer, but I am only His little spouse, and I want to try to return to Him love for love. Tell me, I beg you, what I should do to have Our Lord look down on me with favor.

SAINT MARGARET

Melody: "L'ange a fini sa mélodie" ["The Angel Has Finished Her Song"].

You must leave this countryside
To obey the Divine King
But He'll be your companion.
He wants to go with you.

JOAN

And my parents The Dear God will take care of them, too, no doubt?... The sorrow that my leaving will bring to them is more painful to me than all these other sacrifices
