CATHERINE, sobbing.

So, you don't love me anymore, since you want to leave me?... I'll die of sorrow... And our poor parents, they'll never be able to bear such pain.

JOAN, sadly.

Now I am sorry I've told you my secret, since it made you cry. I cried myself, when the Archangel told me to leave, but Saint Catherine and Saint Margaret came to comfort me. They've promised to protect me and they said that God will greatly reward my dear parents, if I faithfully obey the Lord's voice.

CATHERINE

I won't cry anymore, since it troubles you.... I see quite clearly God has visited you, I see something in your face that inspires respect.

JOAN

Now, Catherine, you must go home to our dear Mother, but don't say a word about my secret. I will tell her when my voices order me to.

 CATHERINE

Joan, will your voices come back? I'd love to hear them, and see the Saints who sing so beautifully.

JOAN

They will not sing in your presence. And it's no more for me that they let themselves be heard, it is to save France. I'm just a feeble instrument chosen by God who will lead me by His mighty hand in order to complete His work.

CATHERINE

So, Joan, must I leave you?... I cannot get used to the idea!... At least, don't go without telling me.

JOAN

No, Catherine, I promise you that, and I hope I'll soon be back in my dear village of Domremy.

CATHERINE

Oh! I'm so afraid the king won't let you come back!...

JOAN

My dear little sister, we must leave the future in God's hands; if we should never meet again here below, we'll see each other above in the Heavenly Homeland where nothing will ever separate us. Then you'll rejoice with me about this beautiful mission the Lord has given me today, to preserve the Faith in our dear France and bring crowds of the chosen ones to Heaven!

CATHERINE embraces her and says:

How very blessed you are to have been chosen by God, and I am proud to be your little sister. But what about me, can't I do something for God?...

JOAN

Always stay pure and constantly in union with God and you will be doing great things for Him; that's how you can help me bring about victories over the heretics, and in Heaven you'll share in the glory, and in a happiness like my own, different paths will lead us both to the same end

(She kisses her little sister.) Goodbye, Catherine, pray for me and pray for France while I fight for her.

[Scene 13]

Catherine leaves in tears. Once she is gone, JOAN kneels and chants to the tune of "Pourquoi m'avoir livré l'autre jour, ô ma Mère ? " ["Why Did You Deliver Me the Other Day, Mother ?"].

For You alone, O my God, I will leave my Father
And all my dear family and my beautiful church steeple.
For You, I am going to leave and go fight in the war;
For You, I am going to leave my valley, my flock of sheep.
Instead of lambs, I will lead an army.
I give you all my joy, and my eighteen springtime.
To please You, Lord, I will take up the sword,
Instead of playing among the wildflowers. (2x)

My voice, now mixed with the whisper of the breeze
Must soon ring out in the midst of combat;
Instead of the dreamy sound of a faint bell,
I'll hear the clatter of men at arms.

I desire the Cross!... I love the sacrifice!....
Oh, deign to call me, I am ready to suffer.
To suffer for Your love is joy to me.
Jesus, my Beloved, I want to die for You. (2x)

[Scene 14]
Saint Michael appears with the other two saints. He carries a sword, Saint Catherine a palm and Saint Margaret a crown. (Melody: "Les Rameaux" ["The Branches"].)

SAINT MICHAEL

The time has come, Joan, you must leave.
The Lord Himself arms you for war.
Daughter of God, do not fear death
For soon will come the life for which you hope.

SAINT MARGARET

You will reign, dear child.

SAINT CATHERINE

Following the Lamb, with the virginal company

THE TWO SAINTS together.

Like us, you shall sing
Of God's royal magnificence.
