THE ANGELS AT JESUS' MANGER

THE CHARACTERS

The Child Jesus — The Angel of the Child Jesus — The Angel of the Holy Face — The Angel of the Resurrection — The Angel of the Eucharist — The Angel of the Last Judgment

[Scene 1]

THE ANGEL OF THE CHILD JESUS

He carries a vessel of incense and some flowers and sings to the tune of "La blonde Enfant de la colline " ["The Blonde Child from the Hill"]

O Word of God, glory of the Father
I contemplated You in Heaven.
Now I see on earth
The Most High become mortal.
Child whose light inundates
The angels of the brilliant dwelling,
Jesus, You come to save the world,
Who, then, will comprehend Your love?...

Refrain

O God in swaddling clothes,
You delight the angels.
Word made Child,
Trembling, I bow before You.
Who then will comprehend this mystery,
A God Who made Himself a little child?...
He came to earthly exile,
The Eternal One...the Almighty!
Divine Jesus, beauty supreme,
I want to respond to Your love,
To witness how much I love You,
I shall watch over You forever.

The brightness of Your swaddling clothes
Attracts the angels. Word made Child,
Trembling, I bow before You.

Since the vale of tears
Possesses the King of the elect,

For me, Heaven has lost its charm
And I have flown towards You, Jesus...
I want to cover You with my wings,
Follow You everywhere here below
And all the most beautiful flowers
I will sow beneath Your footsteps.

Child, I want a shining star
To form Your cradle
And the dazzling white snow
To make a graceful veil for You.
I want the distant mountains
To lower their heights for You.
I want the fields
To bloom with celestial flowers for You.

The flower is the smile of God.
It is the distant echo of Heaven,
The fugitive echo of the lyre
In the hands of the Eternal.
This melodious note
of the Creator's harmony
Wants, with its mysterious voice,
To sing to You, O Savior Divine.
Sweet melody,
Smooth harmony,
Silence of the flowers
That sing of the greatness of a God.

I know that they are Your friends,
Jesus, these ravishing flowers.
You come from Celestial meadows
To seek the souls that are your sisters.
A soul is a perfumed flower,
Child, that You would like to gather.
Jesus, handsome Lily of the valley,
For a single flower, You want to die !!!....

Ineffable Mystery,
The adorable Word,
Will shed tears
While gathering His harvest of Flowers.

The Angel pauses a moment, leans over the Child Jesus and says to Him:

O Divine Jesus! why does this charming smile answer my song,  even though I tell you of tears?... O sweet Child!... I understand Your look.... Already You would like to leave Your cradle to begin to gather the flowers that have charmed You... Alas! soon You will have to go away from this poor stable, the only shelter your earthly homeland has to offer You... You'll leave to flee  before a mortal prince who will tremble on his throne at Your divine kingship... But, fleeing to the land of Egypt, You will bring in an abundant harvest of spring flowers... All the happy children of your age will receive the white crowns your brief stay here has already earned for them, these innocent lambs will sacrifice their days-long lives, for You, Jesus, the very author of life, but in return You
will place in their infant hands the palm of the victorious and throughout all eternity this gracious army will rejoice at the foot of Your throne, O Divine Lamb!...
Thus will Herod's cruelty be outwitted; wishing to wipe out Your empire,  he will send before You a legion of martyrs destined to form Your court..........
O Jesus! how sweet it will be for me to contemplate Your triumphs!... How eagerly I will announce to the faithful Joseph when the time has come for You to return to your country... It is I who will support Your holy Mother through the fatigues of the trip... When she lays You to sleep at evening, in the
shade of the palms, I will be there, watching over You, fending off night's fears and dangers... I will sweetly sing canticles of Heaven and as soon as I see that the Eternal Word and His holy Mother are asleep, I  will wrap them in my wings to shield them from the desert's chill!...

The angel pauses a moment, then goes on:

O Sweet Jesus! why talk of the future?... You are still only a day-old child... Ah, let me sing of Your charm and sweetness...

The angel sings to the tune of "L'encens divin" ["The Divine Incense"]

Jesus Divine, what melody is there
That can tell of Your sweetness and beauty?...
Charming flower, barely in bloom,
Who will sing Your fragrance, your purity?
Where is the sweetly
Sounding lyre
That can describe
Your ravishing charms?

[Scene 2]

An angel enters carrying the instruments of the Passion. He shows the Guardian Angel a veil imprinted with the Holy Face  which that angel contemplates with delight.

THE ANGEL OF THE CHILD JESUS

O my Brother! what is this ravishing image? Having contemplated the ineffable face of the Divine Child, I believed I could no longer find other beauty on earth, but the mysterious impact of this veil shows me  the same beauty as that of Jesus, with fresh charms!!!...

THE ANGEL OF THE HOLY FACE

sings to the tune of "L'encens divin":

Angel of Heaven, this image is the lyre
That knows how to sing of the charms of Jesus
The only melody that can tell of
The sweet shining radiance of the Flower of the elect.

Divine Face,
Yes, Your beauty
Hides for the angel
The brightness of heaven!...

The angel kneels before the Infant Jesus and leans over Him.

Jesus Divine, at the dawn of Your life,
 Your beautiful Face is bathed in tears;
Tears of love on the blessed Face
Will flow to the evening of sorrows.

Divine Face,
Yes, Your beauty
Hides for the angel
The brightness of heaven!...

Jesus, I recognize in this image
The shining radiance so pure of your childhood Face.
I recognize on your divine Face
All the charms of this bloody veil.

Divine Face
Yes, Your beauty
Hides for the angel
The brightness of heaven!...
Last verse :
Divine Jesus, suffering is dear to You
And Your kind look penetrates the future.
Already You wish to drink from the bitter cup.
In Your love You dream of dying.

Ineffable dream!...
Day-old Child!...
Adorable Face!...
You embrace me with love.

THE ANGEL OF THE CHILD JESUS

Divine Jesus, yes, the brightness of Your august face sur passes the splendor  of the Heavens!.... Oh! As soon as human beings will have contemplated Your beauty, they will hasten to give You their hearts, they will live only for You....

THE ANGEL OF THE HOLY FACE

Alas, my brother! don't you know of the ingratitude of mortals?...  Don't you know what Isaiah predicted, the prophet whose inspired eye already saw the hidden charms of Jesus?... "He is without beauty, without splendor (he said), we have seen Him; He had nothing about Him that attracted attention and we did not know Him He appeared to us as an object of scorn, the least of men, a man of sorrow who knows what it is to suffer!... His face was as hidden.... He appeared contemptible and we did not recognize Him... We considered Him as a leper, as a man struck by God and humiliated!..." [Isaiah 53:2-4]

[An additional loose page, 3*r, is slipped into the manuscript at this point.]

O Jesus! Must it be that so much love will remain unknown? (He leans over the Infant Jesus. After a fairly long silence, he goes on, looking at the instruments of the Passion which the Angel of the Holy Face is holding.) O Divine Child! why does Your sweet glance fall on this cross? Why do You smile on this cruel crown?...... Ah! let me take You to Heaven, since earth has nothing but sorrows for You........

But no... I see in your infant's look that the cross has more charms for You than the eternal throne of the Heavens....O Jesus!... I cannot comprehend the immense love that made You descend to earth!.... (He weeps.)
