"Who is this who comes from Edom and from Basra with his robe tainted red?... Who is this whose beauty is shown forth by his clothing and who walks with all-powerful strength?...
It is I, the one whose word is a word of justice, who comes to defend and to save Why then is your robe all red and why is your clothing like the
garments of those who stamp out wine in the winepress?... I was alone as I pressed out the wine with no one from among all the peoples with me. I looked around me and there was no one to help me... I sought and I found no help! [Isaiah 63:1-3, 5]..."

THE ANGEL OF THE HOLY FACE

sings to the tune of The Passion.

Seraph, weep in silence,
You see this day-old Child.
The thorns, the cross, and the lance
Make Him tremble with love.

Turning toward the Infant Jesus.

Alas! why am I an angel,
Incapable of suffering?....
Jesus, with one sweet exchange
I would like to die for You!!!....

THE ANGEL OF THE CHILD JESUS

O Jesus! Must I then see You die? After having protected You in childhood, saving You from Herod's  rage, can I not snatch You from death?... (He leans towards Jesus.) Divine Child, I will know well how to shield You with my wings I will know how to crown You with roses when the ungrateful want to ring Your brow with thorns! (The angel places a kiss on Jesus' forehead.)

THE ANGEL OF THE HOLY FACE

displaying Veronica's veil.

THE ANGEL OF THE HOLY FACE

My brother, look at this image which struck you as so beautiful... Consider that it was not roses that crowned Jesus in this splendor!... Don't you know that the King of Heaven has a thousand legions of angels who could defend Him and cover Him with their wings?... But Jesus wishes to suffer, He
wishes to weep to redeem His brothers on earth!!!...

THE ANGEL OF THE CHILD JESUS, sadly.

Alas! must it be that Jesus, the lovely Lily of the valley,

should be wounded by those cruel thorns?.... Must it be that the sweet fragrance of my ravishing Flower be wasted on ungrateful souls who do not want to receive it? (He weeps.)

THE ANGEL OF THE HOLY FACE, after a pause.

Console yourself, beautiful angel, the fragrance of our Lily will not be spread in vain. A great number of pure souls will hasten to receive it. With their Well-Beloved, they will climb the mountain of myrrh, with Him they will suffer, they will wipe the Divine Face and, contemplating His precious tears, they will cry out:
"O Jesus! how charming are the pearls You've made to shine on Your Face!...
They glitter in Your half-closed eyes
With a reflected light that charms us all.
The splendor of the starry Heavens
Is nothing compared to a single tear!..."

THE ANGEL OF THE CHILD JESUS

Yes, the tears of Jesus glisten more than the splendor of the Heavens and are more beautiful than morning dew... But the height of my sorrow is the thought that one day the gracious face of this divine Child will be buried in a tomb ... Who will see Him then?... Who will be there to wipe away His tears?.... Even Mary herself will no longer be able to contemplate the dear features of her adored Child!... (He weeps again.)

[Scene 3]

AN ANGEL enters carrying a banner of the Resurrection.
Melody: "Je suis du Ciel le joyeux messager" [".I am the Joyous Messenger from Heaven"]:

Weep no more, Angel of the Savior God,
I have come down from Heaven to console your heart.
This weak little child
will one day be strong.
He will rise again
He will reign forever!...

To Jesus. (Refrain)

O God hidden in the form of a Child!
I see You shining,
And already triumphant!...

I will lift the stone away from the tomb
And looking on Your beautiful face,
I shall sing
And rejoice,
 My own eyes seeing
You rise again in glory!...

Refrain

O God hidden in the form of a Child!
I see You shining,
And already triumphant!...

I see Your infant eyes
Shining in divine splendor and wet with tears.
Word of God
Your fiery voice
Must resound one day
 All aflame with love!

Refrain

O hidden God, my eyes do see You
Rising to Heaven
And reigning in glory!...

[Scene 4]

THE ANGEL OF THE EUCHARIST enters, holding a chalice with a shining host on top of it. He sings to the tune of "Sur terre tout n'est pas rose" ("It's Not All Rosy Here on Earth"):

Behold, my brother angel,
Jesus rising into Heaven.
I myself came to earth
To adore Him at the altar.
 Hidden in the Eucharist,
I see the God Almighty.
I see the Author of life,
Much smaller than a child!...

Refrain

Ah! from now on I want to take
My place in the sanctuary
To offer to God my prayers
And the hymn of my love.

2

I want to sing with my lyre
The charms of the hidden God.
I want in holy delirium
To be inebriated by His beauty.
Ah! that I might be nourished at the tabernacle
By the God of love
And by a very sweet miracle
Be one with Him each day.

Refrain

At least I want to loan my ardor
To every holy soul
That they might fearlessly
Approach the Savior!...
