The Divine Little Beggar Of Christmas

Asking For Alms From The Carmelites.

While the community is united for recreation in the evening, an angel appears carrying in his arms the little Jesus wrapped in swaddling clothes. He sings the following to the tune of "Sancta Maria, J'ai vu les séraphins en songe, " etc. ['Holy Mary, I Have Seen the Seraphim in a Dream "]

At the name of the One whom I adore,
My sisters, I come to hold out my hand
And to sing for the Divine Child
Because He cannot vet speak....

For Jesus, the Exile from Heaven,
I have met in the world
Only a profound indifference
This is why I come to Carmel.
So that your tenderness
And your caresses
And your praises
Oh sisters of the angels!
Be for the Child.
Burn with love, delighted soul,
A God made Himself mortal for you.
Oh! touching mystery
The One who is begging from you
Is the Eternal Word!...

Oh my sisters, approach without fear.
Come, each in your turn.
 Offering your love to Jesus,
You will know His holy will.
I will tell you the desire
Of the Infant hidden in swaddling clothes
For you who are pure like angels,
And who nevertheless can suffer.
May your life,
So very full,
And your sufferings,
Your joys,
Be for the Child.
Burn with love, delighted soul,
A God made Himself mortal for you.
Oh! touching mystery
The One Who is begging from you
Is the Eternal Word!...

The Mother Prioress comes forward first to adore the Infant Jesus whom the angel sets down in a manger prepared in advance; then he presents to the Mother Prioress a small basket filled with little pieces of paper; she takes one of it at random, then without opening it she gives it to the angel who sings about the alms for -which the Little Jesus asks. The Mother Prioress goes back after having kissed and caressed the Divine Child. All of the sisters come, in turn by rank of religion and follow this same routine.

The following verses are sung to the Christmas tune by Holmès: ''Trois anges sont venus ce soir," etc. ["Three Angels Have Come This night

[1]   A Golden Throne

Listen to the loving desire
Of Jesus, your only Treasure.
He is asking for a throne of gold from you
While finding none in the stable.
The stable is like the sinner
Where Jesus doesn't see anything
That can rejoice His heart,
Where He can never rest.
Save, my sister,
The sinner's soul.
Jesus sighs for this Throne
But even more,
It is your pure heart that He desires
As His Throne of gold.

[2]   Milk

He who nourishes the elect
With His Holy and Divine Essence
And made Himself the Infant Jesus for you
Begs for your help.
In Heaven, His happiness is perfect
But on earth. He is poor.
Give, mv sister, a little Milk,
To Jesus, your little Brother.
He is smiling at you
In a soft voice He is telling you:
"It is simplicity that I love
Christmas, Christmas,
I come down from Heaven
Because mv Milk of love is you."

[3]      Little Birds

My sister, you want to know
What the Infant Jesus desires.
Ah well! I will tell you tonight
How you will make Him smile.
Catch some charming birds
Let them fly around in the stable.
They are the image of children
Who cherish the Adorable Word.
To their sweet songs,
Their chirping,
His childish Face radiates.
Pray for them,
For one day in Heaven
They will form your crown.

[4]     A Star

 Sometimes, when Heaven is black
And covered with dark clouds
Jesus is very sad in the evening
Being without light in the darkness.
To rejoice the Infant Jesus
Like a twinkling Star
Shine with all virtues
Be an ardent light.
Ah! May your fires
Tear away the veil of sinners
Guiding them to Heaven!...
 The Divine Child
The morning Star
Chooses you for his gentle Star.

[5]     A Lyre

Listen, listen, mv sister
To what the Infant Jesus desires.
He is asking you for Your heart
As His melodious Lyre.
In His beautiful Heaven
He enjoyed the harmony of all the holy angels,
But He wants you at Carmel
Like them to sing His praises.
My sister, sister,
From your heart.
Jesus wants the melody
Night and day,
In songs of love
Your life will be consumed....

[6]    Roses.

Your soul is a sweet-smelling lily
Which charms Jesus and His Mother,
Listen to your Beloved
Who says very softly and mysteriously:
"Ah! if I cherish the whiteness

Of lilies, symbol of innocence,
I also love the rich color
Of Roses of repentance.
When your tears
Purify hearts
Great is the joy that you cause Me
Because I will be able to
As much as I desire
To gather roses by the handfuls."

[7]    A Valley

As by the brilliance of the sun
All nature is embellished,
How it gilds with its rosy fire
The valley, deep and in bloom,
Thus Jesus, the Divine Sun,
Approaches nothing that He does not gild.
He is resplendent at its morning
Much more than a brilliant dawn.
At its wakening The Divine Sun
Lavishes your exiled soul
With His gifts,
His warmest rays of light.
Be His pleasant Valley.

[8]    Harvesters

Over there, under other horizons,
In spite of the frost and snow,
The crops are already turning a golden color
Which the Divine Child protects.
But alas! In order to gather them in
Souls on fire are needed
Harvesters willing to suffer,
Making light of sword and flames.
Christmas, Christmas,
I come to Carmel
Knowing that my wishes are yours.
For the gentle Savior
Give birth, my sister,
To numerous souls of apostles.

[9]    A Cluster of Grapes

I would like a tasty fruit,
A Cluster of grapes all golden
To refresh the King of Heaven,
The adored little mouth....
My sister, how sweet is your fate!
You are this chosen Grape.
Jesus will press you very strongly
In His little beloved hand.
The Gentle Darling
Is far too little
To eat the Grape itself
The juice sweetened
By Him made all golden
That simply is what He loves!

[10]     A Little Host

Jesus, the Beautiful Divine Child,
To communicate His life to you
Transforms Himself every morning
Into a little white host.
With much more love still
He wants to change you into Himself
Your heart is His dear treasure
His happiness and His supreme joy.
Christmas, Christmas,
I come down from Heaven
To say to your delighted soul:
The Gentle Lamb
Lowers Himself toward you
Be His white and pure Host.

The following verses are sung to the tune of: “Au Rossignol -
Quand ta voix, céleste prélude», etc.

[11]    A Smile

The world does not recognize the charms
Of Jesus, your lovable Spouse,
And I see some small tears
Sparkle in His sweet eyes.

Comfort, oh my beloved sister,
This Child who holds out His arms to you,
To charm Him, I beg you,
Always smile here below.

See, His glance seems to say:
"When you smile at your sisters,
O mv spouse, your Smile,
Is enough to wipe away my tears."
Your Smile (repeat) is enough to wipe away my tears!
[12]    A Toy

Do you want to be the Toy
Of the Divine Child on earth?...
My sister, do you want to be pleasing to Him?
Remain in His little hand.
If the lovable Child caresses you
If He presses you to His Heart,
And if sometimes He leaves you,
Make all of this your happiness.
Always seek after His caprices .
And you will charm His Divine eyes.
Henceforth all your delights
Will be His childish desires...
Your delights (repeat) will be His childish desires.
[13]    A Pillow

In the manger where Jesus rests
Often I see Him awaken.
Do you want to know the reason why?
He doesn't find any pillow there!....
I know your soul only aspires
To comfort Him night and day
Ah, well! The Pillow that He desires
Is your heart burning with love.
Ah! Be always humble and soft
 So that the Divine Treasure
Can say to you: "O my Spouse!
In you I gently fall asleep..."
My spouse (repeat) in you I gently fall asleep.
[14]    A Flower
The earth is covered with snow
The cold weather and frost are everywhere,
The winter and its sad attire
Have faded the flowers here below
But for you has bloomed
The charming Flower of the fields
Who comes from the Blessed Homeland
Where an eternal springtime reigns.
My sister, hide yourselves in the grass
Close to the Rose of Christmas
And be also the Little Flowe
Of your Spouse, the King of Heaven
The Little Flower (repeat) of your Spouse, the King of Heaven.

[15]   Bread
Every day in your prayer
Speaking to the Author of all good
You repeat: "Our Father!
Give us our daily bread!"
This God Who has made Himself your Brother
Suffers hunger like you
Listen to His humble prayer
He is asking you for a little Bread.
O my Sister! be very sure of it,
Jesus wants only your love,
He is nourished by the pure soul.
That is His daily Bread.
The pure soul (repeat) is His daily Bread.

 [16]   A Mirror

All children love it when someone places them
Before a faithful mirror
Then they smile gracefully
Because they think they see another child.
Ah! come into the poor stable
Your soul is a brilliant crystal.
Reflect the Adorable Word.
The charms of the God-made-Child.

Ah! be the living image
The pure Mirror of your Spouse.
The Divine brightness of His Face
He wants to contemplate in you!...
His Face (repeat) He wants to contemplate in you.

[17]   A Palace

The great and noble ones of the earth ,
All have sumptuous palaces.
Humble cottages are. on the contrary.
The abode of the poor.
So see in a stable
The Little Pauper of Christmas
He veils His ineffable glory
By leaving His Palace in Heaven! ...
Your heart loves poverty
In it, you find peace.
Also, beloved sister, it is you yourself
That Jesus wants for His Palace
I t is you yourself (repeat) that Jesus wants for His Palace.

[18]   A Crown of Lilies

Sinners crown the beloved head
Of Jesus with thorns...
Admire the Divine graces
That the earth no longer knows.
Oh! may your virginal soul
Make Him forget His pains
And for His royal Crown
Offer Him virgins, your sisters.
Ah! come very near to His throne
to charm His ravishing eves
Weave His Crown before Him.
Form it with beautiful brilliant Lilies
His Crown (repeat) form it with beautiful brilliant Lilies.
The following verses are sung to the tune of: "Mignonne, voici l'Avril,"
etc...

[19]    Candy.
My sister, little babies
Love Candy very much.
Therefore, fill quickly The good little hand
Of Jesus, the Divine Child
His look invites you to it.
The sweets of Carmel
Which charm the King of Heaven
Are all your sacrifices.
My sister, your austerity
And your great poverty
Are Jesus' delight.
  [20] A Caress
Little Jesus is asking
Nothing more of you
Than a very soft caress.
Give Him all your love
.And you will know in return
The Charity that hastens to you.
If one of your sisters
Comes to pour out tears to you,
Immediately and with tenderness
Beg the Divine Child
That with His little hand
He may gently caress her!...
 [21]   A Cradle

On earth there are few hearts
Who shun the favors
Of Jesus, the King of Glory,
But if He happens to fall asleep
They stop serving Him,
No longer wanting to believe in Him.
