 THE TRIUMPH OF HUMILITY

  [Scene 1]

The scene takes place in the recreation room where three novices are gathered for some free time. — Sr. Thérèse of the Child Jesus, oldest member of the novitiate — Sr. Mane-Madeleine, professed with the white veil — Sr. Mane of the Holy Spirit, a choir postulant.

SR. THÉRÈSE OF THE CHILD JESUS

"What happiness to find ourselves together to have a fine free day... Let's see — Sr. Marie of the Holy Spirit, what do you think of the feast of Our Mother? Have you ever seen anything in the world so charming as this union of hearts, this sweet gaiety?

SR. MARIE OF THE HOLY SPIRIT

No, I've never seen anything that pleases me so much... The feasts of Carmel have a special charm, the family spirit gives them a distinctive character and that is what delightsme..... Oh! how happy I am here, I feel so close to Heaven andI have only one desire, to unite myself intimately with Jesus by becoming His fiancée.

SR. MARIE-MADELEINE

Oh! we have all that same happiness of having been chosen by the Good God... Of you, my sisters, I understand this, you are so good!., but me, a poor little shepherdess, how could He lower Himself to take me for His spouse? He knows so well that I have neither learning nor virtue.

SR. THÉRÈSE OF THE CHILD JESUS

Our Lord did not lower Himself any more in coming to you than He did in coming to us; on the contrary, in His eyes, the most humble state is the grandest; but, like you, it moves me to contemplate His love. I love to meditate on those words our holy Mother Geneviève heard in one of her ecstasies: ''To be thespouse of a God... What a title! What a privilege!...... " It is JesusHimself, in fact, who becomes the spouse of our souls and no archangel, one of the glorious princes of His court. Far from acting like Him, Satan (the one deprived of love, as our mother Saint Teresa called him), is content to betroth the souls that belong to him to [some of] his demons. This thought touched me [vividly] when I read the story of the extraordinary conversion of___________ Diana Vaughan. What a beautifullady___________ Oh! how___________ now

that she has become a new Joan of Arc...
But my greatest desire will be, when her mission is fulfilled, to [see her] united with Jesus in our little Carmel.

SR. MARIE-MADELEINE

She's one who would get from it ecstasies and rev elations, for the Good Lord___________ [now] fewer privileges than the devil who called her his dear daughter. Regardless, some people have to be so lucky!

SR. THÉRÈSE OF THE CHILD JESUS, smiling.

My sister Marie-Madeleine, are you envious, then, of consolations and extraordinary graces?... I'd thought that you were more perfect than that...

SR. MARIE-MADELEINE

My prayers are offered in an aridity worse than a garden where no drop of rain has fallen, and, well, I would not be upset at seeing a little of what goes on in the other world.

SR. THÉRÈSE OF THE CHILD JESUS

Don't you know that Our Father St. John of the Cross has said that it is a venial sin to ask for ecstasies and revelations?

SR. MARIE OF THE HOLY SPIRIT, astonished.

It's a fault.... I knew nothing of this... Well! I still desire them... "What's to be done?...

SR. MARIE-MADELEINE

What's to be done, my sister? Ah well, like me, to accept it when you don't have them.

SR. THÉRÈSE OF THE CHILD JESUS

You'd be better off. it seems to me, if you'd recall the words of Our Lord: "Happy are those who have not seen and have believed." That would do you more good.

SR. MARIE-MADELEINE

Listen, you enlighten me... The Good God said: Happy are those who have not seen and have believed," but he did not say: "Happy are those who have not heard.'' As for "s self, I'd be quite happy to hear without seeing; and you, my sister Marie of the Holy Spirit?

I agree with vou. but I don't dare hope to hear echoes from Heaven.

   SR. MARIE-MADELEINE

One could just as easily hear the voices of Hell; those would be less agreeable, but I'd still rather them than nothing at all, and I'd very much like to hear what is said down there. It seems to that I'd be better off knowing what the devil thinks about us.

SR. THÉRÈSE OF THE CHILD JESUS-

I myself know that well; he thinks of us as his most mortal enemies, especially when we love Jesus very much, therefore the vicious demon won't take the trouble to let us ear his awful voice.

  SR. MARIE-MADELEINE

I can't disagree, my sister Thérèse of the Child Jesus. [But] I'd very much like to put my ear up to the gate of Hell, especially if there were a few of us together. And you, my sister Marie of the Holy Spirit?

SR. MARIE OF THE HOLY SPIRIT

Me, too... but I believe I'd be afraid.

SR. THÉRÈSE OF THE CHILD JESUS

There is no reason to be afraid, since Our Holy Mother assures us that the demons are no more to be feared than flies.

  SR. MARIE-MADELEINE, clapping her hands

What happiness! I see that you are beginning to think as I do.

SR. THÉRÈSE OF THE CHILD JESUS

Even were I to think as you do, that wouldn't allow us to hear the devil's conversation... (Laughing.) Ah! what a strange free day we are having!... Luckily, no one can hear us.

SR. MARIE OF THE HOLY SPIRIT

You laugh about it, but what would you say if our dream came true?

SR. THÉRÈSE OF THE CHILD JESUS

I would say that the Good God was willing to fulfill the desires of' simple and innocent souls, and I'd profit from the experience to strengthen my faith. I don't feel I have the courage to do as St. Louis did and refuse to go see Our Lord appearing in the Host, but I would not want to ask

anything that seemed indiscreet to me.

 SR. MARIE-MADELEINE

God is more condescending than you are. Perhaps He's going to ask St. Michael to push open the gates of Hell a little, and then we'll hear something.

SR. MARIE OF THE HOLY SPIRIT

Listen............. I hear singing... our wish is granted.

  [Scene 2]

SAINT MICHAEL is heard, singing to the tune of "Menaces maternelles.

The veil of faith is lifted
In the name of your Well-Beloved.
Children, I come to fulfill the dream
That you have expressed.
For you I shall open the gate
Of the place of eternal sorrows.
  Hear the somber clamor
Of Lucifer and his cohorts.

  I am Michael.
I come from Heaven. (2x)

 My dear sisters (2x)
Laugh at Hell enraged
And do not fear its furies,
Since Jesus fights for you.

   [Scene 3]

Behind the screen, ice hear some explosions, a heavy chain dragging, demons crying out and waving their pitchforks, but the novices see nothing, since they are seated with their backs to the screen.

  LUCIFER, in a thunderous voice

Shut up, I didn't gather you together for the pleasure *of hearing your cries and the racket of your chains. I have serious things to tell you.

  BEELZEBUB

Speak, Lucifer, but hurry, I am unhappy here; I'd rather suffer my hell on earth; there, at least, I could soothe my rage by damning souls which Adonai has redeemed.

 LUCIFER

Beelzebub, I am armored at you. You don't do your job well. Why have you let Michael seize from us several of our most faithfulfollowers? Why do you fuss over your personal business, instead of plotting to establish my reign over all the earth?

 BEELZEBUB, in an ironic tone

Non serviam!... you're the one who gave me that motto — can you believe I'll obey you, when I've refused to abase myself before God?... No, never, never!... each is his own master here; that's why the union is so great, why our legions are so well policed, why our worshipers never cease to argue the fine points of our sacred rites....................... You know better than anyone, wily old serpent, that discord is the distinctive mark of your kingdom... Our only point of agreement is the implacable hatred we've sworn against the mortals. It's true that doesn't stop us from calling them our clearest friends, even as we hate them to death. (He laughs mockingly.) Is it my fault if a few, more slippery than the others, escape our nets?.. .After all. what we take in is still not bad... Few have a taste for the savings of Christ, especially when He says to His disciples: "If you want to walk with Me, renounce yourself and take up your cross." Ai!... how it hurts me to say those word.
But listen, Lucifer, if you want to spill the rage that devours you when you consider the friends who've escaped us, pick on Asmodeus; he's the one who's just failed our cause in the most lamentable way by losing his fiancée, Diana Vaughan.
