quite young, but the Lord has already shown me several times that He will never abandon those who seek only Him.

BROTHER AUGUSTI

Brother Stanislaus, would you be willing to confide in me your sweet experiences? I promise you, I'd never say a word about them to anyone else.

SAINT STANISLAUS

I couldn't tell you everything., it would take too long. But I want, at least, to tell you one story.
Two years ago, I was at the school of the fathers of the Society with my brother Paul. He'd chosen our lodgings in a heretic's house, since he wanted to live in the town's most beautiful house. Poor Paul had not seen the light from on high. As he was the elder, I felt obliged to submit to his wishes, and Jean Bilinski, who was in charge of us, took his side in matters of taste and of ideas. Think, my brother, about what I have suffered; shortly thereafter, I fell severely ill. Paul could not bring himself to send for a priest, on account of our heretical landlord, who would never have let one into the house. As I found no comfort on earth, I turned to Heaven. Since my childhood, I had especially venerated the Virgin Saint Barbara, so, with my heart full of confidence, I begged of her that she would not let me die without receiving the holy Viaticum.

BROTHER AUGUSTI

Ah! I perceive that she fulfilled your wishes; doubtless, the nasty heretic was converted?

SAINT STANISLAUS

No, unfortunately, but the inhabitants of Heaven don't need the permission of heretics to go where they will. I saw Saint Barbara come into my room, shining in glory and accompanied by two beautiful angels. She held the sacred Host in her virginal hands, and I had the ineffable consolation of receiving from her the God of the Eucharist, the Well-Beloved Lord Jesus.

BROTHER AUGUSTI

A Saint who holds in her hands the Divine Eucharist, what a mystery!.... Why was it not rather the angels who gave you Holy Communion?

SAINT STANISLAUS

During my trip to Rome, an angel gave me Holy Communion, but Saint Barbara was not there. In God's kingdom, her glory is greater than that of the heavenly spirits; that's °why that sweet Virgin gave me the Bread of Angels in front of them; also, perhaps, she had desired here on earth to share in the sublime functions of priests, and the Lord wanted to fulfill that desire.
