Dear Godfather,

Although far from you, your little goddaughter hasn’t forgotten you and her heart sends you her very best wishes. And what wishes they are! Ah! dear Godfather, I don’t need to explain them and form banal sentences out of them, no, those [1v°] sorts of phrases don’t touch the heart, but there are others that in their simplicity say much more than all of them.

Happy New Year! to you dear Godfather and to Miss Pauline whom I love very much. May it be full of joy and may God bless you every day.

You have heard, dear Godfather, about our happy trip, which was lovely and pleasant in all respects. The weather was magnificent and the mild [2 r°] temperature made it easier to enjoy this charming country. There are riches galore! The ground you trample on is made of precious marble, and with every step you discover new marvels. I find it’s impossible for anyone who hasn’t been to this country to form an opinion about it. I also very much liked Switzerland, which is such a picturesque country, and criss-crossed with mountains, valleys, deep gorges, waterfalls, and [2 v°] charmingly coloured streams. I was delighted with Switzerland. The traveler likes Venice for its originality but his stay there is a bit dull. Milan, Padua, Florence, Bologna, Loreto, Assisi, Pompeii, and Naples, are all pretty towns but Rome is the Queen, interesting for its pagan history but more so for its Christian heritage!

Dear Godfather, I could go on forever about this magnificent trip, but unfortunately I must stop here!

I will do so, dear Godfather, but not without sending you and Miss Pauline all my wishes once more.

Your respectful little daughter

Céline M.
