From Céline to Marie.

October 13, 1877

Dear little Marie,

I'm very happy to write you. Today, I'm going to attend little Jeanne Charon's burial. I'm sorry she died, for she was a darling.

Thérèse is here at my back, talking to me about Sister Aloysia, but I told her to be silent. She's not playing with shells any longer. I just lent her my top, and so she's really enjoying herself. If I have time, I'll make you a little copy to please you, so my letter will not be long. Now that I lent my top to Thérèse she's no longer bothering me.

Au revoir, dear little Marie. I'm kissing you with all my heart.

Your little pupil, who loves you very much.

A person, Céline
