From sr Francoise-Therese (Leonie) to Mother Agnes of Jesus – October 13, 1935

V + J! From our Caen monastery this 13th October 1935

Dear little Mamma,

Your little note brought me immense pleasure! My beloved little sisters’ prayers helped me enormously during my retreat. I owe them in part for the insights I received on obedience (a virtue I’ve always particularly loved).

I saw as clear as day that the greatest threat to the soul is self-love, which blinds us and as a consequence is the main reason we fall. Also, I fully understand the words that my saintly little sister put into practice so successfully, and which were so insightful: “Since I abandoned all thought of self-seeking, I have lived the happiest life possible.”

My resolution is to be obedient to renouncing my own judgment, no ifs, no buts, imitating as closely as possible the obedience of my adorable Saviour during his mortal life, especially during his painful Passion. What perfect submission!

It’s in the Holy Eucharist that Jesus’ submission is total and He is the most perfect model of obedience. He lets us do whatever we want with Him without the slightest resistance. In short, if I look to Him in my work, remembering everything He endured for me, He will instruct and help me.

Love is repaid by love alone . . .

That is what I shall work towards for the rest of my days in exile, of which I don’t think there’ll be many more (that’s an encouraging thought) but I only want what pleases the Divine Thief. I am becoming more and more surrendered to God.

As soon as the cold begins to make itself felt, our dearest Mother will move me to a heated cell. The poor insignificant little creature that I am is speechless before such kind affection. Our revered former Mother Superior will be extremely touched by such thoughtfulness from our beloved and increasingly generous Carmel.

The Holy Mass and General Communion will fill her with joy, and us too for that matter, for we love her very much. Was the dreaded knee operation successful? With heartfelt kisses, your ever loving

Sr Françoise-Thérèse
