Dear little sister,

Advent is here once more! I ask myself how many more Advents there can possibly be for us. Our lives seem never-ending, and yet they will end because everything ends in this life.

We have just had an excellent retreat preached by Rev. Fr Desbuquois. What a saint he is! It does us such good to hear him because we can tell he practices what he teaches. Merely the sight of him is a teaching in itself. There are still a few people who love God on earth and make up for all those who refuse to love Him. How I pity them! We must pray hard for these poor stray sheep! During the retreat, the priest showed us how much we depend on one another. One instruction on charity particularly struck me, and I’ve taken the resolution to stop thinking of the faults of such and such a person and instead to think of their virtues. It’s much more calming for the soul, and it pleases God immensely. Poor Father Desbuquois is so solicited that he spends a part of the night writing letters. The fact that he can give us a retreat is an amazing feat. He had over 80 letters to reply to here, and 100 waiting for him in Paris.

Darling little sister, what are we compared with these tireless apostles who work so hard for souls? It is fortunate that an act of love can make up for our helplessness and that we have our Spouse’s merits at our disposal. We are very rich and at every moment we, too, can save souls.

I don’t know whether I told you that we saw Jeanne about 3 weeks ago. But there’s no interesting news. Solange was there but didn’t come to see us for fear of her little girl catching a cold in the visiting room. I pity you for having to see Mrs Houdayer quite often. There’s nothing I dread more than visits.

Farewell darling little sister. Let’s live more and more heart to heart with Jesus. Only near Him do we find peace and nourishment for our souls.

Your eldest sister who loves you dearly

Sr Marie of the Sacred Heart

Your letter was given to the chaplain. I read it; it was very kind.
