Darling little sister,

Our Thérèse was professed 45 years ago today. What a long way she has travelled since then! Look at God’s response to her hidden life and love! We really can live in faith when we observe such wonders of mercy. Yes, God reveals Himself to us, despite us being in the darkness of exile. I don’t know whether you can be in greater darkness than me. I can assure you, I am not being flooded with consolations. I think my disabled condition has much to do with that. If I could run in the garden, have a bit of freedom, things would no doubt be different, but God wills things to be as they are and everything He does is for our own good.

Today the Bl. Sacrament is exposed in the Oratory. I sat before Him as unfeeling as a log. In short, nothing can pull me out of my misery, I can see that. I hope my divine Spouse makes up for it, which is most certainly what He is doing!

Our darling Mother was 74 years old yesterday. You would never believe it to see her so active and practicing the Rule with no exceptions. – A postulant came forward a few days ago, but we fear for her health. Our lifestyle is austere and she wants no other convent than Carmel. It’s very difficult to find good postulants. We have a little novice who has just been Professed (on 24th August). We waited for two years after she joined. She has shown extraordinary courage and God has blessed her efforts. She is from Tunisia and her father and mother have just spent a few days in Lisieux. Her father, who hadn’t practiced his religion for over twenty years, converted on seeing his daughter so happy. He took Communion and left promising her to always do his duty as a Christian.

Farewell, darling little sister. I would like to be able to tell you things of interest, but I can no longer see. So I’m going to finish my letter by telling you some old news which is that I love you dearly.

Your eldest sister Sr Marie of the Sacred Heart

My respectful and most affectionate regards to your dear Mothers.
