Dear Jeanne,

It is my turn to make excuses, for I am very late in thanking you for all your treats, but I had a faint hope of expressing my gratitude viva voce and I put off writing you for this reason. Oh, no! I did not have the nasty thought that my little sister was forgetting me, but I found it very natural that she was content to offer a prayer for her little Thérèse, and I was more touched than could tell you when receiving your amiable letter. The wishes from my dear cousin were also much appreciated. Finally, the jars of jam came to crown all your acts of kindness toward me!... Our Mother St. Teresa was so grateful that she used to say: "One could win her heart with a sardine.'" What would she have said had she known Francis and Jeanne?...

But heaven is not so far from earth that she cannot see them and bless them. I am even confident that she loves my dear Jeanne particularly.

Our Holy Mother also had a sister by the name of Jeanne, and I was really touched when reading her Life to see with what tenderness she watched over her little nephews. So, without leaving aside good Saint Anne, 1 am praying to St. Teresa to obtain through her intercession the favor of being an aunt myself. I do not doubt that she will answer me by sending to my dear little Jeanne a blessed family that will give to the Church some great saints.

The delay does not discourage me, for I know much time is required at the court of Rome to make saints, and I cannot bear God any grudge for placing all His care and His love into the preparation of little souls whom He will one day entrust to my Jeanne.

1 beg you, little sister, to offer a prayer to St. Teresa. I am sure St. Anne will be happy with this; union gives strength, and together they will obtain the grace we are asking.

I beg you, dear Jeanne, speak to Francis on my behalf, thanking him for his kind wishes, and I kiss you with all my heart with all the tenderness of a little sister.

Thérèse of the Child Jesus re. carm. ind.

Our Mother and Sister Marie of the Sacred Heart send you a thousand tokens of affection, and they do not cease praying that dear little Jeanne's desires be fully answered.
