From Mme Martin to her brother

March 23, 1868

I was happy to hear that little Jeanne is doing well and that she’s so good and easy to care for. My little boy is very good as well. He’s the picture of my first little boy; I’ve never had children who look so much alike. Let’s hope they’re not alike to the very end! I’m always afraid that this little one will fly away like his brother. He’s very strong, but he doesn’t look very well, like my first boy, and I don’t like that at all.

I hope good Saint Joseph will let me keep this one. It’s enough that he already has one. He had the kindness to send me another son right after I gave him the first. Surely, I owe this last one only to his special intercession. Last year I made a novena during his month, and I finished it on his feast day. Nine months later, to the day, he answered me. As you see, he couldn’t have done any better. Perhaps you’ll laugh at what I’ve written, but I don’t laugh at it, I take it literally.
