From Mme Martin to her brother

November 12, 1863

You can’t imagine the joy I felt when I received your telegram. (Isidore had just received a Bachelor of Science degree). I cried from happiness for the first time in my life. You know, I contributed a little to your success because I asked the Poor Clares in Alençon to pray for you Wednesday and Thursday at 10:00 in the morning, thinking that was the time of your exams. Then I received Communion for you. I hope you’re a little appreciative for all I’ve done.

Louis was very happy as well. In your honor we bought a goose on Saturday and celebrated on Sunday. We were all very sorry that you weren’t here to share in the feast and have fun with us!

I don’t have enough time to write any longer and, besides, the more I say to you the more you’ll tease me about my style; I’m certain of it…. I did, however, win first prize in style in the past. Out of eleven compositions, I won first prize ten times, and then I was in the first division and in the upper class. So judge the ability of the others!
