Sr Françoise-Thérèse Martin to her three sisters in the Carmel

25th December 1921

Dearly beloved little sisters,

It’s so sweet to meet beside the crib of the divine “Newborn”. Is there anything more eloquent than the flesh of the Son of God incarnate? He says but one single word, “Love”, not with His tongue, which purposely remains silent, but with His ineffable littleness and total self-abasement. Through His example, He powerfully preaches the Holy Spiritual Childhood, of which He is the Master and accomplished model. This is the only thing which is real. The rest is but lies and vexation of spirit. I desire this uncreated wisdom with all my strength, for this alone constantly delights me. That is why there is nothing better or more precious that I can wish you, because, on earth, it signifies possessing God Himself. Alas! I, poor ignorant little creature that I am, can only splutter when I dare to speak about such divine things. But I humbly share my very dim lights with you. They can only come, I think, from the One who bows down to the humble and comforts them. I am very far, however, from the ideal to which I aspire concerning humility. With God’s help, I’ll reach my goal I hope.

I was waiting for your letters before finishing my own. I fear I will bore you with all my essays. Yet little Mamma has reassured me by asking me for news regarding my spirit and body. The latter is crumbling fast, thanks to God! My adored Angel is keeping a watch on me. It is with joy that I sense Him preparing to come and swoop on His poor little prey and carry it to His kingdom. How happy I would be to witness our Thérèse’s beatification celebrations from up above!
