From sr Francoise-Therese (Leonie) to her three sisters in the Carmel - August 28, 1923

28th August 1923

Beloved little sisters,

It was 46 years ago today that our dear Mamma exchanged exile for the Heavenly Homeland. She would, if I’m not mistaken, be 92 years old if she was still on this earth of tears . . . . But it’s an earth of joys too, because since everything here below comes to an end, all the celebrations in honour of our darling Blessed Sister, from the matchless ones in Rome to those that have just taken place in Lisieux, are no less than true, holy and pure joys. She really has been treated splendidly but, thanks to God, far from dazzling me, all this makes me even more nostalgic for heaven. Oh, how I thirst for it . . . . All my desires are satisfied now that I possess this very precious relic of our little sister. This pretty tooth, so magnificently mounted, is a real gem. And I’m so happy to have obtained this treasure for our dear Community. They would never have had it if I hadn’t been here, wretched as I am.

Not a single cloud hung over our revered Mother’s feast day and her loveliest present was undisputedly this manifest relic. I know our Mother is writing to you, darling little Mamma, to thank you herself, for our joy and gratitude are very, very great.

Do not worry about hurting me by asking me for Thérèse’s crucifix back. I will happily send it to you, I love you so much! And what’s more, God has given me the grace to no longer be attached to anything. Our revered Mother can’t believe it.

From your poor little sister who loves you tenderly and melts with gratitude.
