V+J! From our Monastery in Caen on the Feast of the Transfiguration of Our Lord 1922 [6th August]

Dearest little sister,

The little pen and, more importantly, very loving heart of your Léonie, are very eager to wish you a happy birthday this year. But you see I prefer being early than late and, what’s more, I’m taking advantage of this good opportunity presenting itself to sing you the same old tune again, which is: I love you, I love you, I love you! And it seems to me that this love is a foretaste of the love of heaven.

I offer you my Communion (birthday bouquet) and everything in an eager attempt to draw blessings and sweet favours from our King of Love upon His little Bride, the spouse who devotes herself so fully to bringing Him Glory. What a surprise you’ll have when you leave exile (may this be as late as possible). It will be then that Jesus, who ordinarily does not let himself be outdone in generosity, will get even . . . . I was very moved by the telegram. Thank you! But it’s not enough for me. I’m still waiting for the letter from Cardinal Vico. He’s so good to you; a true father. He must have written to you after his audience with the Holy Father. You so kindly share everything with us that we have come to rely on it. Of course, our revered and dearest Mother is more than happy to give you her most recent election circular, from 1921, since you desire it. But why didn’t you tell us earlier that you would like it? We would have done the same for you as we do for our Sisters in Le Mans, for we dare pride ourselves in being very close, perhaps even closer, to you than to our Sisters there. Our circulars are only sent when there’s a change of superior, that is to say every 3 years and not every 3 months.

This picture of doves is so delightful! Dear little Mamma, you deprived yourself of it for me. I’m so touched! Don’t forget to tell our little Sr Marie of the Child Jesus how much I thank her for her fraternal devotion in giving me this description of the stained-glass windows. Truly, I am very spoilt by my dear Carmel.

We sung the poem “Toilette de la béatification” twice [poem written by Mother Agnes on 6th June 1922 describing the preparations carried out in the monastery in view of the coming celebration]. Actually, we sing all of darling Mamma’s poems. We are all delighted with them. Please, always send the music with them.

I thought that our saintly father and mother were married in the night of 11th to 12th July. – How disappointing that there is as yet no news from Rome!

Farewell in God as always. Let all four of us remain in His embrace, for we love each other so much . . . .

Sr Françoise-Thérèse Martin

It’s exquisitely thoughtful of you to let us keep the speech . . . . How can we convey all the gratitude we feel in our hearts?
