V + J! From our monastery in Caen this 6th August 1926

Darling little Céline,

I’m very sure that mine will be the 1st feast day letter you receive, and I know you won’t be angered by this; we take advantage of every opportunity that presents itself now because of the high price of the postal service, and worse still, its unreliability, since thefts keep occurring.

What sad times we are living in! And we must remember that all things that pass away are good, despite everything, since they herald the reign of the Sacred Heart over the world. Did He not say, “I will reign despite Satan and his accomplices”? That’s why they are causing such an uproar; they are making the most of what they have left. The light will triumph over the darkness, and shine all the brighter for it. The truth can neither mislead us nor be mistaken, no more than it can cease being God.

Darling little sister, we lift up our hearts to contemplate our glorified Jesus, who entered into His Kingdom by no other means but the cross. Let us love our daily crosses because they help us to resemble Him. Once this life is over, we desire no crown and no throne other than our Beloved.

Until we are all reunited in the heart of God, our great joy in exile stems from the fact that all four of us are already fused into one with Him.

I will take Communion for you, darling Céline, as a feast day gift. With my love, and the fondest of kisses. Your very poor little sister
