From sr Francoise-Therese (Leonie) to Mother Agnes of Jesus – November 12, 1922

12th November 1922

I don’t remember ever having taken a retreat as spiritually dry and devoid of comfort as this one. Thérèse said that such a retreat is a grace, because, and it’s true, that in such a difficult state of mind, there can be no illusions.

It was our darling saint who gave me my resolutions. On the 1st Friday of November, I heard Thérèse tell me, “My little way is right, and I wasn’t mistaken in following it. ‘My sorrows and my joys, my little sacrifices; those are my flowers!’ This is how I became holy. Do as I did. I will help you to become a saint as well and, if you are faithful, I will come to fetch you soon. You see, in a short time, you can make up for your life of unfaithfulness.” I fully adhere to your Way, o my darling saint! Like you I’ll strew flowers over Jesus by being perfectly faithful at the first sound of the bell, for it represents His voice, and by redoubling my efforts in my work. Every stitch the needle sews will represent an act of love, a perfumed flower given to Jesus, and will make Him smile. Consequently, I’ll very naturally live in a spirit of faith, trust and love.

Finally, by the same token, my deliberate and hitherto regretted faults will vanish of their own accord. So be it!

Little Mamma, tell me what you think about the state of my poor little soul, however unfaithful and unmortified it may be, and however much it flees suffering.
