From sr Francoise-Therese (Leonie) to Mother Agnes of Jesus – October 28, 1923

28th October 1923

My darling little Mamma,

I haven’t yet had time to tell you about my retreat. Here are the resolutions I took: In your last letter, my beloved little saint (a letter from Thérèse), you wrote, “If you want to be a saint, it will be easy for you: please Jesus and unite yourself more closely to him.” I want to particularly focus on these two points: gentleness and humility in human relationships, especially during recreations, and also greater diligence in my work, however much it might cost me. “I take you, darling Thérèse, to be my Director. In me and with me, you must continue your religious life, so that I might more quickly and surely succeed through your ‘little way’, which is nothing other than the path of divine love.”

Dear Father Martin inspired me with such trust that I let him read these resolutions. I couldn’t help but open my heart to him. I felt as though I was in the presence of a saint. Our Bl. darling has found us such an apostle in him!

I don’t need to talk about the festivities held in town, though they were very lovely, beloved little Mamma, because your little Turn Sisters have given you all the details. As for the celebrations we held here, there are no words to describe them. We felt our “little queen” amidst us. All our hearts swelled with joy . . . .

Thank you to dear Mother Sub-Prioress for her kind letter. The apotheosis was sent the very next day, Thursday, to the Carmelite convent as requested. I immediately recognised Céline’s brushstroke. As I gazed at this heavenly beauty, tears flowed silently down my cheeks and I said the words, “Who is this coming up from the wildernessleaningonher beloved?”

Our revered Mother held a General Communion for our beloved Carmel in gratitude for all the generosity with which you unceasingly lavish us.

I will write once more before Advent, dearest little sisters. In the meantime, accept all the affection in my very loving heart. How sweet it was to be on retreat at the same time as my darling eldest sister and little Céline!
