From Sr Francoise-Therese (Leonie) to Mother Agnes of Jesus – October 7th 1928

V + J! From our monastery in Caen this 7th October 1928

Darling little Mother,

We’ve had so many sweet and pleasant surprises since you last wrote! These pictures from the missionaries bring us great pleasure, as do the cards of the pretty little chapel at Thérèse’s birthplace, which apparently is a real gem.

I’d really like to keep the precious rosary that was sent to me from the United States for my own use, but can I change the cross on it without losing all its exceptional indulgences?

On the 3rd, our little saint’s feast day, at the request of our sacristan, our beloved Mother allowed me to say the Mass responses at our chaplain’s Mass. You’ll understand, little Mamma, how moved, happy and honoured I felt. Look how kindly everyone is treating me . . . . Our dear Priest at the altar really is an angel. You would swear to the holiness of priests seeing him say Mass. He finished his first teaching by saying, “They say that one’s first Communion is the best day of one’s life, much like a priest’s first Mass, but it’s not true; the best is one’s last Communion or one’s last Mass before going to heaven.”

I learnt from the Annals the sad news of our holy friend Rev. Father Fajella’s pious death. We now have one more protector in the Heavenly Homeland.

Please tell your Mother Sub-Prioress how touched I am that she thought to send her little Visitandine Sister a memento of her angelic brother. I’m glad to see I’m still considered as family by the Carmelites of Lisieux.

I’m delighted to hear of His Excellency’s imminent visit to his favourite Carmel. I think we all have reason to rejoice in this precious gift from heaven. Everywhere there is unanimous praise for His Excellency. The lessons of St John of the Cross are ever so enlightening; I delight in them.

I send you all my love, beloved little sisters.

Is Holy Mass said every day in the little Alençon chapel? I’m hoping to go on retreat on Thursday 11th! Or if not, it won’t be long after. I’ll take you with me in prayer. Do pray for your little sister for she is in great need of conversion.
