From Sr Francoise-Therese (Leonie) to Mother Agnes of Jesus – August 13th 1933

V + J! From our monastery in Caen this 13th August 1933

Darling little Mamma,

Our dearest Mother’s feast day was, as always, a very lovely and very joyous occasion. It is at times like these that we experience a perfect union of hearts and can sing, in the words of King David, “See how good and how pleasant it is for brothers to live together in unity.”

As always, you made a large contribution to our celebration. It wouldn’t be complete without our beloved Carmel. Our dear little Sister Marie of the Trinity (generosity personified) can rest assured; the Carmel of Caen sent us the precious and voluminous parcel in plenty of time. The boutique, or, to be more precise, our beloved Mother’s stockroom, has been replenished to her great joy and to that of all those whom she’ll be able to satisfy. I’m reading, or rather meditating, Fr le Thellier de Poncheville’s magnificent speech. Thank you for having given us several copies.

Darling little Céline, I see that you, too, are suffering. My heart bleeds. It couldn’t possibly be otherwise, but I’ve been reassured by being told that it must be arthritis in your teeth and jaw. Our revered former Superior has the same problem in her ears, resulting in her having been deaf for months. I was so touched when, on your feast day, this dear Sister told me that she had prayed hard for you! Nothing escapes her. She loves all of us, our relatives and friends with the affection of a grandmother. She has a delightful spiritual simplicity. What a wonderful example of virtue she is, and we have her right in front of us every day. She’s a true saint.

What a delightful picture you sent me, little Céline. Thank you for the thoughtful little note accompanying it, darling little sisters. You deprive yourselves of everything to please me. We are thinking of you and praying that God and His Saints will help you in this difficult trial, beloved little Céline. Our dear Sister assistant (Thérèse Pougheol), in particular, sends her love.

It’s not the Mr Leroy that you know. Ask Fr Travert about him; he will be able to give you more information about the excellent 39-year-old priest than I can. He knows both him and Fr Germain very well. With lots of kisses from my loving heart to you and our two darling sisters

Sr Françoise-Thérèse

Enclosed is the charming poem that was sung to our Most Honoured Mother Marie-Thérèse. She has a very great devotion for the Holy Child Jesus.
