From Sr Francoise-Therese (Leonie) to her three Carmelite sisters - September 17th 1933

V + J! From our monastery in Caen this 17th September 1933

Beloved little sisters,

I feel it has been a long time since I had news. It seems like an age since we last wrote to each other. I would like to know whether you are in good health, whether little Céline still has toothache and if she is sleeping better, etc. etc.

Our solitary retreats have begun. Our dear Mother is going on retreat this evening. I think I’ll be with the first group, which will go into the blessed wilderness on the evening of the 30th. For this reason we call it the group of St Thérèse of the Child Jesus, because we are under her special protection.

Like me, you must have received some letters and generous presents from dear Miss Trébuchet, the nurse at the Verdier hospital (in Montrouge). She had the kindness to send me 50 francs so that I could purchase a small stone to go towards building the basilica. I’m deeply touched by this. Of course our Mother is waiting for an opportunity to send it to you.

Darling Céline, Mr Louis Pougheol will shortly request you to the visiting room. He will tell you everything you would like to know about the painful loss of his brother Henri, who is sorely missed by everyone. You did well to write to our dear Sister Assistant. She loves you very much, you know.

I’m not sick, and yet I notice with joy that I feel the weight of the years in my old legs. They can hardly carry me anymore. I sway as though I were drunk. In fact my whole organism is weakening, a sign that the divine Thief is not far away. What bliss! Rejoice with me and whatever you do don’t make me miss the train again.

Darling little sisters, I am wholly surrendered to God. I only want what He wants, and resignation is all I need to live.

In life and in death, I’m wholly yours and I love you more dearly than ever,

Sr Françoise-Thérèse
