From Sr Francoise-Therese (Leonie) to Mother Agnes of Jesus – November 4th 1934

V + J! From our monastery in Caen this 4th November 1934

Beloved little Mamma,

How touched and happy I was to receive your reply to my letter so soon, but all the same, doting Mamma, I would have happily waited for someone to bring it . . . All your work is becoming increasingly heavy and burdensome for you. I see your life as one of our saint’s permanent miracles, which it must be; she has a duty towards you because you give freely and tirelessly for her glorification, and because her glory and that of God are one and the same. Our gentle little Queen has great power over the Heart of her King Jesus.

Darling little Mother, how I’d love to take all your troubles from you! I am in very good health at the moment, like the old bridges of Rouen. The inevitable little dizzy spells vanish as quickly as they come; they are not worth speaking of. I really do believe I’ll see the end of the world. I mean that as a joke because I know very well that the divine thief is too good to let me languish here for that long.

I’m sending you back my retreat resolution because you wish to keep it. Moreover, I have everything to gain if you do, because through their prayers, our darling little sisters will help me put it into practice. I copied it out for that reason.

Your dear jubilarian can count on having a Mass said here on 5th December. We are very happy to offer it to her. Our dearest Mother will do everything in her power to make sure it is celebrated in our chapel so that we can attend. I can recall the sweet memory of our revered Sister Marie of Jesus witnessing my testimony together with my darling eldest sister Marie of the Sacred Heart in that most blessed Carmel, so it is with joy that I shall take Holy Communion for her; I owe her at least that.

You spoil us so, beloved little Mamma! What beautiful calendars, pictures and medallions of the Holy Child Jesus. In short, we have been lavished with gifts, and they shall be shared out among us at Christmas. Yours are the gifts we love above all others. Thank you! Thank you!!! Would it be possible to have a separate little lot that we can stick on the brand new calendar in our Community room?

I don’t know your troubles by experience, darling little Mamma. Mine are of a completely different nature: itching, and pains in my back and stomach. I’ve always been very susceptible to these things, but I’ve known worse. Now they are like roses and I love strewing them before Jesus.

With my ever-increasing love,

Sr Françoise-Thérèse
