From Sr Francoise-Therese (Leonie) to Sr Marie of the Sacred Heart – June 14th 1936

V + J! From our Caen monastery this 14th June 1936

Dearest eldest sister,

Your feast day naturally calls me to your side. How well named you are! I sense that you have been specially chosen by the Sacred Heart of your divine spouse, and that is why He is holding you nailed to His Cross. Darling little sister, our Beloved is being hounded by evildoers’ hate. Love is not known! Love is not loved! It’s not surprising He is begging and looking everywhere for victims. How comforting it is for those He has consecrated to hear Him say “Don’t be afraid, little flock, for it has pleased your Father to give you His Kingdom.” Nothing less would help us bear our suffering.

I received a note from Hélène Houdayer telling me that her brother-in-law has died. Do you think the unfortunate soul is in heaven? It’s a miracle Marguerite never lost her faith. Anyway, we must hope against all hope. When I heard he was so sick, I quickly had him and his brother inscribed on the “Dial of Mercy” and took two hours’ guard for him and his brother Charles, who is an atheist as well, I think.

Happy, holy and blessed feast day, beloved little sister! You can count on having a Communion from me; it’s the most beautiful bouquet I can give you. I love you so much. Your little old sister is still shaking as though she has played a nasty trick, but one day, a very good and blessed trick will catapult me from this sad earth into heaven. What joy there’ll be when all four of us are together again in the true Homeland. Until then, we love one another infinitely, even here in exile.

Your little sister

Our Turn Sisters must have taken my letter to you. I didn’t know they were going to Lisieux. We are very pleased with the pious pictures. Thank you! Thank you! Thank you!

Let us trust God through thick and thin. Everything turns out well for those who love Him.
