From sr Francoise-Therese (Leonie) to her three sisters in the Carmel - November 15, 1936

V + J! From our Caen monastery this 15th November 1936

Darling little sisters,

This will probably be our last talk before Advent, which is fast approaching.

Beloved little Mamma, I was so happy with the photograph that you sent me of our dearest eldest sister. It’s very good! I recognise her perfectly.

It was with keen interest that I read the Bishop’s touching speech. It’s exquisitely thoughtful! We increasingly love and appreciate this Shepherd of ours. May God let us keep him for a very long time despite his fragile health. I understand how much his support and help means to you, little Mother, because he is high-minded, and what’s more, he’s a real saint, with devouring zeal. We were also very satisfied with the visit we had from His Eminence, Cardinal Suhard. He’s another Prelate after God’s own Heart. He has such a warm smile and is so welcoming! He cheered me up by saying I was a good little nun. He said it with such conviction that it warmed my heart, as though Jesus Himself had said it, which I don’t doubt He did.

Today, on the Feast of the Presentation of the great yet humble three-year-old Mary, all four of us have renewed our holy vows with joyful and grateful hearts. What an ineffable reunion! For me, there’s no other feast day quite like it. It’s a foretaste of heaven. The golden anniversary of Thérèse’s godmother, our darling eldest sister, which took place within the privacy of your most blessed cloister, was more than delightful, it was heavenly. Many, many thanks for generously sharing it with us. The yearly calendars bring us immense pleasure. These beloved gifts are always much appreciated.

The Carmel in Carpentras has again generously sent us some lozenges. Send our thanks, please.

I am being thoroughly spoiled; the cell I’m in is heated. “How can I repay the Lord for all the blessings he has given me?”

I send all my love, which already echoes the love that awaits us in the heavenly Homeland.

Sr Françoise-Thérèse

Little Mamma, I deeply regret not having replied to you as soon as I received the photos! I kept waiting for an opportunity that never came. I’m so, so sorry! It’s not because your little daughter loves you any less, as you know. Thank you for your lovely letters; they are a feast for my hungry little soul.
