From sr Francoise-Therese (Leonie) to her three sisters in the Carmel - July 13, 1937

V + J! From our Caen monastery this 13th July 1937 (following the inauguration of the Basilica on 11th July by Cardinal Pacelli)

Dearest little sisters,

How I long to hear how the past few heavenly days have been in your blessed Carmel. Tell me everything, please, down to the smallest detail, because I know that the Annals won’t mention anything about the private Community celebrations. Here, thanks to your customary generosity, the radio transported us not only to the Basilica but also to Rome. What indescribable bliss it was to hear our Holy Pontiff Pius XI! We were all on our knees, such was our emotion, not to mention your poor little sister, who watered the floor with her tears. What immense joy must await us in heaven if we can already taste such joy in exile? It’s redolent of divinity and the eternal face to face. And the Holy Prelate’s magnificent speech and the litanies of saints were so very beautiful!!!!

All day I had the honour of staying by our dearest Mother’s side, even in the refectory. Two of our dear Turn Sisters will bring you my little letter of thanks, in which I, alas, express myself very badly. We can only stammer when speaking about such great things. We would do better to borrow the language of angels and saints.

What has become of our darling godmother (Marie, Thérèse’s godmother) now that all the excitement is over? The silence of our blessed cloisters helps us to savour the memory of these past indescribable days, when we have been closer to heaven than earth. Yes, in truth, we can say that in His Sacrament of Love, our sweet King was praised, loved, exalted and glorified as never before. As his brides, our one desired aim has been fulfilled. Let us be thankful and joyful.

I love you, my increasingly dear sisters

Sr Françoise-Thérèse

The illustrated little brochure is most interesting. Thank you!
