From Sr Francoise-Therese (Leonie) to Sr Genevieve (Celine) - September 16th 1938

V + J! From our Caen monastery this 16th September 1938

Darling Céline,

I’m writing to quickly thank you for your letter. This swollen gland of mine isn’t at all nasty. It won’t grow any bigger now, I don’t think. It’s large and oval like an almond.

As for the black hair pins, we don’t use them. We would need five of them at the very least to hold our veils in position. You understand we can’t afford ourselves that luxury!

Thank you for the wonderful almanacs. And we are deeply touched that you are willing to provide us with a lovely celebratory dinner on the 30th. How can I express our gratitude? It really is boundless. It’s fortunate we have Jesus to pay all the debts that we owe to our increasingly beloved Carmel.

As for us, our sole shelter from the terrible storm threatening us is Jesus’ Sacred Heart and the heart of His and our most Holy Mother. Let us trust in the safety of this harbour. From there, I once again assure you of my steadfast affection,

Sr Françoise-Thérèse
