From Sr Francoise-Therese (Leonie) to her three Carmelite sisters - February 2nd 1939

V + J! From our Caen monastery this 2nd February 1939

Darling little sisters,

We have one more protector in heaven; our highly respected and well-loved former Superior left for the true Homeland this morning. What a huge void she has left, and what a fine example of virtue she gave us! She understood the concept of spiritual childhood so well, and was a woman of delightful simplicity. Thérèse said, “For little souls, there will be no judgment.”

You thoroughly indulged me for my feast day, beloved little sisters. I don’t know how to thank you. My heart is overflowing with gratitude; it’s full to bursting. Fortunately you know me well, so you’ll understand. This comforts me. What a delightful gondola! And it’s filled with blue banknotes, and more importantly with your kind letters, a treasure I always appreciate. What a joy and a surprise it was to find a lovely letter from our beloved Godmother with it [Marie was Thérèse’s godmother]! His Lordship told us that she received a manifest favour from her holy goddaughter. Would it be indiscreet to ask for more details? I don’t think so; you have no reason to hide anything from your little visitandine.

Darling little Mother, it’s fortunate we didn’t entrust our feast day letters to this person claiming to be General de Castelnau’s granddaughter. How deceitful!!!

With all my love to you, beloved little sisters, not forgetting dear Sister Marie of the Trinity, whom I love very much and thank for her Communion,

Sr Françoise-Thérèse
