From Sr Francoise-Therese (Leonie) to Sr Marie of the Sacred Heart – February 12, 1939

V + J! From our Caen monastery this 12th February 1939

Darling eldest sister,

I’m writing especially to you because in 10 days’ time, which will be Ash Wednesday as in 1860, you’ll be 79 years old. Have a happy and very holy birthday despite everything!

Beloved Godmother [Marie was Thérèse’s godmother], all these painful bereavements detach us from this miserable world. It really is a valley of tears. Oh! I understand our darling Thérèse’s words better than ever; “I’m not dying, I’m entering into life.” I’m deeply saddened by the death of our Holy Pontiff, Pius XI. We owe him so much gratitude. His Holiness stopped at nothing to glorify our little sister, whom he liked to call “his Star”.

You can’t have received the letter announcing the death of our revered former Mother Jeanne-Marguerite Descarpentry, because little Mamma would surely have written an affectionate note. Our Mother was deeply upset to lose her. Her health is suffering keenly from all these ordeals, so she is taking some necessary rest.

The letter from dear Sister Marie of the Holy Spirit touched me so deeply! Her reliquary is delightful. What a charming present! I truly am overindulged and spoilt! Thank you also for the new stock of pious pictures, etc.

Yes, little Céline, I like that bust at La Musse very much. You’ve had a great idea there. I congratulate you. Much-loved sisters, you can see how difficult I find writing to you. I’ll have to stop. But I’ll never stop loving you, quite the opposite; my heart beats and burns with love for you.

From your Vistandine, who will always be with you, dearest sisters

Sr Françoise-Thérèse B.B.G.

Darling Godmother, you can count on having 3 Communions from me. I’m sure of being able to compensate you through Jesus, our Everything!!!
