From Sr Francoise-Therese (Leonie) to Mother Agnes of Jesus – February 19th 1939

V + J! From our Caen monastery this 19th February 1939

Darling little Mother

You understand we are not going to wait until Easter before thanking you for everything you sent us. The messenger mislaid the letter I wrote to our beloved eldest sister for her 79th birthday next Wednesday. I was telling her how happy I was to take three Communions for her, being unable to offer her anything more precious than Jesus, our one true love and only treasure.

The magnificent reliquary is certainly a lovely present. The different brochures and the parcel of pious pictures are much appreciated. In short, you indulged and spoiled me as always. I received dear Marie of the Holy Spirit’s very affectionate letter, and your little note, darling Mamma, in which you spoke about my 40 years of religious life. I’m so touched by all the kindness that my much-loved Carmel lavishes upon me.

I very much regret my letter going astray. It was personal, as always, for we don’t write to each other to exchange pleasantries. I was also telling Céline that I liked the bust of papa and his little queen at La Musse very much.

Little Mother, perhaps you could ask the messenger whether the entrusted letters (I say letters because Sr Marguerite-Agnès was writing to her sister as well) weren’t simply forgotten in a bag, because all the gifts were loyally passed on to us. I need to retell myself what you said to me when our angelic little sister’s virtues were proclaimed: “You shall practice virtues heroically if, with love, trust and simplicity, you accept what God commands with the aim of detaching your heart from earth.”

I’m mourning our beloved Pontiff and Father, yet I rejoice in his happiness because he must have gone straight to heaven after giving his holy life for world peace.

With all my love and kisses

Sr Françoise-Thérèse

Darling Godmother [Marie, Thérèse’s godmother], have a very happy and holy birthday! Even the longest life in exile is but a dot in space compared with the life awaiting us tomorrow. We shall be reunited in glory. What bliss! Thank you for your kind little note; it meant so much to me. A big thank you for sending us the letter from our distant Brother. Everything that comes from the eternal city interests us to the highest degree. We’ll send it back to you after Lent.
