From sr Francoise-Therese (Leonie) to sr Marie of the Sacred Heart – June 11, 1939

V + J! From our Caen monastery this 11th June 1939

Beloved eldest sister,

Once again, the three of us have the immense pleasure of enveloping you with our infinite affection today, just as we’ll do one day in heaven. It’s very sweet for me, darling Godmother [Marie was Thérèse’s godmother], to think of the happiness that awaits you because I’m convinced that at the end of this life of misery and suffering, you will go straight to the Heart of our Beloved Jesus. That is what I’m constantly praying, especially at Communion. Don’t tire yourself by writing to me, I beg of you. Thinking of you going to such trouble takes away all pleasure for me, and that’s saying something, as you know.

No, my fingers aren’t swollen like yours, but writing is very difficult nonetheless. It’s physically exhausting. Blessed be God! I have high morale, and I’m feeling well, so the rest matters little. You know the song, “les douleurs sont des folles” (“For melancholy is but folly”), etc.

How I do love our Mother Marie-Agnes! I’m so pleased to be able to call her by the sweet name of Mother. As soon as I met this treasure of a nun, I appreciated her straight away. Our souls felt drawn to each other somehow. In any case, we understood each other perfectly.

Our dear Mother is delighted with your letter, little Mamma, and to crown her happiness, it was signed by our two little sisters.

You didn’t mention the terrible storm you had in Lisieux. Were you spared completely? Tell us nothing but the whole truth.

Do you mean that your novitiate is closed? What an ordeal! I am very sorry to hear it. Not long ago, you were spoilt for choice. Let’s quickly appeal to our beloved saint.

All four of us have a foretaste of heaven in the boundless affection that unites us

Sr Françoise-Thérèse
