From Sr Francoise-Therese (Leonie) to her three Carmelite sisters - August 28th 1939

V + J! From our Caen monastery this 28th August 1939

Darling little sisters,

Not a single cloud overshadowed our increasingly beloved Mother’s feast day celebrations, yet as is customary, you contributed largely to this! Thank you! Thank you! Thank you!

Our Mother has a most touching devotion for our saint, and is happiest when spreading it to others. It’s safe to say, darling Godmother, that on this point your beloved goddaughter will never say her work is finished. [The Superior of the Visitation thought of Mother Agnes as her godmother.]

Mr Louis Pougheol’s eldest son, the Premonstratensian friar, is going to be ordained a priest on 8th October. But alas, at the age of 26, he has fallen seriously ill with diabetes. From 31st August to 8th September, we are going to pray a novena to Our Lady of Lourdes for his recovery, through the intercession of little Thérèse, the all-powerful sower of roses. His family and our respective religious communities beg you to join in our prayers.

The dear patient, Friar St Alphonse de Ligori, requests a great favour, which is to be able to celebrate one of his first Masses in the infirmary where our angel flew away to the heavenly Homeland.

Little Mamma, Mgr Canon Anne, who was miraculously cured by our saint, cherishes the same desire. Could you mention it to the bishop? We believe that, at your entreaty, our two friends will be granted this manifest grace. We are once again living in anguish due to these rumours of war. What will come of it all? Only God knows . . . Let us put our boundless trust in Him, and in our Immaculate Mother, for she is our all-powerful advocate and as formidable as an army poised for battle.

Let’s lift our eyes and hearts to heaven, where our family will be reunited again. We have so many protectors there now, as we commemorate the anniversary of our darling mamma’s precious death.

I couldn’t forget my beloved little Mamma’s 78th birthday. I smother her and my two little sisters with kisses.

Sr Françoise-Thérèse

The letter our Pontiff Pius XII wrote for peace is admirable. It should be read while kneeling.
