From Sr Francoise-Therese (Leonie) to Mother Agnes of Jesus – November 27th 1939

V + J! From our Caen monastery this 27th November 1939

Beloved little Mamma,

We had a visit from the bishop yesterday. The more one knows him, the more one loves him! His Lordship told me that he was going to say Mass today in honour of the 30 consecutive years that you have been prioress, not counting the 9 others! It’s admirable! In my immense daughterly love, I eagerly took Communion for you. It’s the least you deserved. I’m so pleased to see how much the bishop appreciates you. He congratulated our dear Mother on the increasingly close relationship and affectionate trust that you share, because your two souls are so very similar. This gives us such a sense of comfort and safety in the troubled times we’re going through.

Advent will only be three weeks long and soon we’ll be in touch again with our best wishes for 1940. In the meantime, a very, very warm thank you for this profusion of pious pictures promoting our saint. We are thrilled with them, especially our dear Mother, who says she is very spoilt by her beloved Godmother.

I was expecting your letter, darling little Céline, and in reply, I send you all my affection, which is boundless as you know. I love all three of you so very dearly,

Sr Françoise-Thérèse

Your grateful daughter thanks you, Reverend “little Mother” and revered Godmother, for the treats received. [The Mother Superior of the Visitation considered Mother Agnes as her godmother.] May you continue guiding your entire little flock with your gentle staff at this time of Advent, so that we might work to help Jesus, and nothing more!!

The union we share with the holy Carmel of Lisieux is our sweetest solace.

Deo Gratias! To celebrate the 30 fruitful years during which my beloved Godmother has been prioress, I pray God might grant her many more years of office, for His glory and the salvation of souls.
