From Sr Francoise-Therese (Leonie) to her three Carmelite sisters - December 27th 1939

V + J! From our Caen monastery this 27th December 1939

Beloved little sisters,

How wonderful it is to celebrate the coming of our divine King of love to this miserable earth. He begs for love from every heart, but alas! Very few reply to His love, which is unknown and scorned. A hellish hatred reigns supreme in all nations and all societies. It’s enough to make you weep tears of blood. Therefore let’s be happy to live for our Beloved. Let us offer Him our old age, weaknesses and all our sorrows for Him to embrace and only then will we be able to comfort Him and repay Him. “What do life and death matter to me,” said our angelic Thérèse, “My only joy is to love you.” So with heavenly joy even in exile, let us wish each other a very, very happy and holy New Year!

If only you knew, darling sisters, what a “doting Mamma” I have in our Mother. I’m touched beyond all words. Seeing me suffering from the cold so terribly, our dear Mother moved me to a heated cell. She also fashioned me a black shawl that covers me almost completely for coming and going through the cloisters. She also gave me a very warm duffle wool undershirt, which she obliged me to accept because she deprived herself of it for me, her poor child: her dearest Mamma had given her two. Look how pampered I am. I would like to be able to share everything with you. If little Thérèse, who suffered from the cold near unto death, had received as much care as I am, she would surely still be here.

Thank you for your kind letters, photos, etc.

Everything that concerns you is precious to me. It’s a foretaste of heaven!

Sr Françoise-Thérèse
