From Sr Francoise-Therese (Leonie) to Mother Agnes of Jesus – January 21st 1940

This letter is antedated, for the feast day of Mother Agnes

V + J! From our Caen monastery this 21st January 1940

Beloved little Mamma,

It’s with great joy that your little sister and child comes each year to wish you a very happy feast day, and this despite the sorrows of exile, particularly in wartime. It’s so sweet to drink from the bitter cup of our Beloved Jesus, whose life and painful passion is perpetuated in those dearest and most devoted to Him.

Darling little Mother, I can think of nothing better to give you than a precious trio of Communions, because Jesus is the wildflower and lily of the valleys. Is He not our sole Treasure? My beloved Mother’s thoughtfulness moves me to tears. Happy to consider herself your goddaughter, instead of offering the General Communion of 21st January to us, her daughters, as her feast day gift, she wants it to be for you, her beloved Godmother. But I know you won’t let yourself be outdone in generosity. No matter how hard your beloved Goddaughter tries, fortunately she won’t have the last word.

We would like to know whether the precious remains of your Holy Mother Teresa escaped the sacrileges perpetrated by the Reds.

How I’d love to share this heated cell with you, darling little sisters! This is a harsh winter. You must be very cold. I’m suffering terribly.

Forgive me, little Mamma, I can’t write any more. Your little daughter is obliged to stop here, which is a big sacrifice as I love my little sisters so very dearly

Sister Françoise-Thérèse

Warm and affectionate wishes from your little daughter Sr Joseph-Marie.
