From sr Francoise-Therese (Leonie) to Mother Agnes of Jesus – September 8, 1940

V + J! From our Caen monastery this 8th September 1940

Darling Mamma,

On this feast day more heavenly than earthly, how can I express what I feel, it’s impossible! Our dear Mother is a very doting Mamma like you, and this says everything . . .

I’ve been with her all day. She placed a crown on my head in the antechoir this morning after Mass. This was done to the singing of Veni Sponsa Christi, because it’s far too early to think about my golden anniversary, which won’t be for another ten years yet. On 2nd July I’ll be 87 years old [sic ! she was 78]. You can see by this photo how old and ugly I am. It was taken when I thought I was going to the monastery of Mayenne. Thankfully, God kept us all here. Our dear Bishop is a reliable counsellor, and we appreciate him more and more.

Yes, much-loved little Mamma, thanks to your tireless generosity, our jubilarian was royally feted, even in the refectory where we had coffee, which is a luxury at this time of war.

My God, my God, give us Your peace at last! Little Mamma, what a delightful portrait this is of our darling saint on the evening of her profession. We would like several pictures but only ordinary ones, as this one would be too expensive. We were already familiar with the delightful poem. We keep it safe in our private records. You merely added the penultimate couplet about our dear Angelic Pastor.

I send all my daughterly affection to you and little Céline. I cherish you both so very much,

Sr Françoise-Thérèse

B.B.G.

What an honour! The pretty crown I’m wearing is the one our reverend Sr Jeanne-Marguerite wore on her diamond anniversary.
